Aurevoir Mes Amis

It is hard to believe that the year is over. Where did the time go? Certainly one of my sweetest memories was the flower-dog I received from the Vargas family during Teacher Appreciation week. Just had to share a photo with you all. Woof, woof!

The third trimester is, in many ways, our busiest of all. We are routinely putting all of the skills we've learned to good use and extending a variety of concepts in meaningful ways.

The children all enjoyed reading The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane. It is a sweepingly beautiful tale of the metamorphosis of a bunny named Edward who discovers the real beauty in life. I highly recommend it to you all. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to follow up with reading Despereaux, also by Kate DeCamillo. Check them out from your local library for a fantastic summer read. We also read Homer Price, a gem of a tale that captures a simpler, more nostalgiac time in our country. There are quite a few of the stories on You Tube that your children would love to view. We did enjoy watching The Doughnuts together, while eating doughnuts of course.

Earlier in the trimester, the students all had a chance to join forces and interview a famous woman in "herstory." Quite a few renowned women visited our classrooms including Betsey Ross, Madam C.J. Walker and Maya Anjalou to name a few. Simply inspirational! Be sure to watch a few videos when you have the time. I will load them as soon as possible. They care quite comical in the best sense.

Who knew that eight year olds would be so interested in electricity? There is something seemingly magical about it, I suppose. We were busy throughout the trimester creating light through wires and circuits while testing conductors and insulators. There are lots of fun Bill Nye videos, also on YouTube, to go along with the unit.

We all enjoyed our exploration of the regions of our country and had the chance to present our individual reports. They were lots of fun. All the children were wonderful tour guides. It was also a nice addition to add power points to each presentation that had been done with Mrs. Berg during tech time. Do you know which state is famous for hazelnuts or which state had the most presidents born there? I bet your children know! Of course, our state luncheon was yummy delicious. We had quesadillas, guacamole, scalloped potatoes, shrimp, and Virginia ham sandwiches along with Boston Cream pie, hazelnut cookies, and good ole apple pie to name only a few things on the menu. Thank you Mrs. Rappold for being our helper and providing all the festive paper goods.

Of course Field Day was lots of fun despite the chilly weather. We really could have used a hot cocoa stand rather than a water stand! However, the nippy weather couldn't dampen our spirits. You couldn't miss us in those neon orange t-shirts. Go Tigers!

Soon after we learned about Tornado Alley, Oklahoma experienced their devastation. The students sprung into action. Thanks go out to Miss Faizah for coming up with the initial idea of a bake sale and all the rest of the students for quickly and enthusiastically jumping on board. Mrs. Merklinger and I recently sent a check to the Moore Public School in Oklahoma in the amount of $300.00. If you could have heard the children cheer as we totaled up the amount, you would have smiled ear to ear. They were beside themselves.

The art show and musical concert were their usual stellar productions. I hope you all take the time to ever so carefully frame your child's sampler as I have done with my daughter's. It is a very special work of art. The children always loved to look at my Sydney's sampler hanging in our classroom to compare stitches they'd done.

Our crowning achievement was certainly our speeches. I am genuinely amazed at the poise and confidence of each student as they present their pieces to the audience. Preparing students as confident speakers is invaluable. I was proud as a peacock!

We all had a ball at our year-end party at Turtle Back Zoo. Thanks go out to our wonderful class moms Mrs. Eldridge and Mrs. Rappold for chaperoning the trip. Enjoy the photos I managed to take in between carousel rides.

It has been such a pleasure to spend the year with your children. The classroom becomes a barren ghost town once they have packed up and left, just waiting patiently for the next group of children to breathe life once again into it. Enjoy your summer!

Best Regards,

Katherine Heiss

Spring has sprung...at long last!

At long last, spring is here! There are so many things for us to look forward to as we enter the last leg of our year. I am sure the children will all be enthused and excited about each new topic we encounter.

Our last few weeks before break were packed with activities. Here are a few of the highlights.

Black History Month
Much to my surprise, everyone went to great lengths to learn about and present their topics. We learned much more about important figures in black history. In addition, Tenajah's mom joined us for a morning of fun as we played a game of  black history trivia game.  Thanks for joining us!
Thanks Mrs. Eldridge
After that, she was appointed National Security Advisor...

Math
We've finished up our multiplication unit and gone on to division. I love teaching multiplication and the kids all love the many games, songs, and chants that go along with it. We have built, sung, and rapped our way through the times tables.

Building with multiplication cups.
Reading
We are so lucky to have our incredible librarian Mrs. Howell who always has something creative up her sleeve. It is always a pleasure of mine to take a walk through the library to see what cool things she's been up to. 3H loved reading Dr. Seuss books to the kindergartner's in Miss Marikakis' class. Everyone looked appropriately silly in their Seuss garb (including me).
We solemnly promise to read each and every day...

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish...

Spanish
If there is any stage fright in this class it is not visible to me. Here are the kids on stage performing their Spanish rap  "Mi Familia". Loved the break out moves.
Science
Each year students love our unit on simple machines. They are so enthusiastic about even the littlest thing. We've had time to explore many simple machines including pulleys, levers, screws, wheels, ramps and levers. I hope you've all been able to check out the website with Rube Goldberg chain reaction machines. Mrs. Merklinger and I are looking forward to seeing the various creations.
You pull the pulley...
I wonder if we could pick up Mrs. Heiss...
Social Studies
We all enjoyed teaching Mrs. Merklinger's class about the Hopi tribe of the Southwest. We researched in small groups and created information packed posters that we presented orally to 3M. Afterwards, we acted out some skits that we had written on various topics. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
Our thespians

See you all soon!

It has been a busy start to the new year. So many new things to learn...so little time!
Happy  New Year!!
It was terrific to see the third graders so enthusiastic about making 'sunflakes' for the children going back to school in Newtown, Connecticut.  3H traveled to many classrooms to help the little ones make their own sunflakes. So many other classrooms delivered their special flakes to us to be sent off! What a special way to spread a little sunshine!
Nothing like having your big brother in class to help...
Everyone has been anxiously anticipating multiplication- so funny. The children actually cheered the first day we began our unit. Along with it do come some really fun games and practice-time. It's no wonder I hear kids say, "I never thought I'd love math." The children have all enjoyed working with the iPads while practicing multiplication. Be sure to load Number Run and Multiplication Bingo on if you have an iPad at home. Let us know of any other favorites. There are just too many to keep track of. The Smart Board has also been a fun tool. Old classics like Buzz! and relay races are a hit too. We will continue on with our facts and then of course- division! Linking operations is very important to number sense and fluency of facts so we will be working with fact families again when we begin division.
Number Run
We all enjoyed our mini unit on colonial times. The children completed a step book and wrote a five paragraph essay on colonial times. The trip to the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison was quite wonderful. It was the first time I had been there as well. Though we missed a few of our friends on that day, we were sure to bring them back quill pens and ink. What a beautiful building- worth a visit if you are ever looking for something to do on a cold winter afternoon. There we got to experience life as a colonial child. It was fun to roll our our own marbles and make horn books. Shreya surely could have had her own marble shop! We can tell you this, the schoolmaster was not a friendly fellow! Since then we have since begun our unit on Native Americans and have been learning about the Iroquois. The main character in our latest read-aloud story, The Indian in the Cupboard, is an Iroquois and that makes all the facts and info all the more interesting and relevant.
Time to get the milk...
Scrub, scrub, scrub...
Tenajah and Ananya showed talent with the quill!
We all decided in January to make becoming better writers a resolution for us so we've been involved in several writing activities to hone our skills. We use the Smart Board every week to practice edit marks and have welcomed Robot Ralph into the classroom.  Perhaps you have heard tell of him- beep! beep! He's been teaching us how to bring our writing to new heights!  Big congrats go out to Ryan Brandl and Zain Zaidi as Editors of the 3H Newspaper! The entire idea and execution is all them. Kudos! A special shout out to the 'Advice Column' girls. I have gotten many compliments about what thoughtful advise was dispensed!
I am Robot Ralph-beep,beep! I am a great writer-beep, beep!
We have been Buddy Reading during part of our I.R. time. Partners self-select a book that looks good to them and then meet to discuss it. It lends itself to some great discussions and detailed recall and connection. We've also had a few commercials on W.H. TV Read- bringing the latest and greatest book recommendations to the classroom.
If you like fantasies, this is the book for you...
In science, we have begun our unit on simple machines. We will be immersed in it for some weeks. It has us thinking about gravity, friction, energy, mass, and ramps! We've been testing out a few different things in our investigations, the latest being ways to create energy and force.
If we create a steeper pitch...

The Valentine's Day dance was hoppin'! There's nothing like seeing a mass of children jumping on bubble wrap to bring a smile to your face.Congrats to Jeni Lynn for bringing the big win to the third grade as hula-hoop champ! Those Vargas children sure do know how to hula hoop!
I have to beat my brother! I must!!
Candy overload...

Be sure to call Mrs. Marikakis to schedule a Parent Conference coming up on March 11th.
